Vanabhojanam Andhra Indian Cuisine @ Little India, Singapore

HALAL | INDIAN FOOD | 11AM - 11PM | LITTLE INDIA SINGAPORE

Not doing any research beforehand and I ended up at this Indian Restaurant located at first floor of the shophouses, along Syed Alwi Road of Little India. What attracted me to go in was the little quotes on the signboard which read: Every Visit is a Picnic.

That is, the meaning of "vanabhojanam" actually means picnic, and it is no ordinary picnic: Vana Bhojanam is practiced in South India during the Karthika Masam, or Karthika Season which fall on October - November. During the ceremony, people sit / pray / medidate under the sacret Amla tree (gooseberry). Women would cook under the tree and everyone eat their food under the tree too! Just like a picnic!

Because I did not do any research beforehand, so I let the waiter decide for me what to eat by giving a guideline: first I will order an Andhra dish (that is their specialty) - Andhra is a province / place in South India, and second, I want mutton. So it was decided one dish - Andhra Chilli Chicken (SGD8.50) and Mutton Dum Briyani (SGD11). Chilled Mango Juice was served as welcome drink, free-of-charge.

Andhra Chilli Chicken (SGD8.50)
Boneless chicken stir-fried with chilli masala

Cucumber Raita and Vegetable Gravy
If you are Indian Food lover surely you would know Raita is the yogurt sauce which goes well with any kind of curry

Kesari - Very sweet, brilliant orange-colored dessert is made from Durum Wheat flour, or Semolina, is a popular dessert from Southern India - the best solution after having hot and spicy food

Andhra Chilli Chicken
Beware of the cili padi

Mutton Dum Briyani
Dum means steam. The basmathi rice is so fragrant, paired nicely with the spiced coated dried curry mutton.
I told the waiter I couldn't finish the whole bowl becasue the serving is very generous.
He just stood there and smile, probably my question reminded him of his children in hometown...
With much guilty I just finished everything on the plate and left a small tips
