Maulana Bistro Corner Putra Walk @ Taman Pinggiran Putra, Seri Kembangan

Introduce to all of you a Nasi Kandar near my parent's house at Seri Kembangan, Selangor -- the Maulana Bistro Corner. I have limited info. on this restaurant, but my dad loves the Nasi Kandar here so much. There are few mamak much closer to home but he chose to visit here, so I believed this must be his preferred mamak restaurant. There are two branches here: Maulana's Nasi Kandar which is parallel with Jalan Putra Permai (a.k.a "the main road") and another shop located exactly at the opposite end of the road which sell Southern Indian Food and less focus on Nasi Kandar.

My mom loves mutton very much but also wanted try the big sotong curry, so she ended up paying RM18 for this plate of Nasi Kandar. WOW! I told her she should share with me.

Mine a bit ordinary -- fried chicken drumstick with cucumber carrot acar. Look at the typical basmati rice, which has longer shape and unique aroma. Thumbs up!

Family Dinner @ Tokyo Kitchen - SetiaWalk, Puchong

No money to visit Japan? Bored with the ordinary sushi-train style restaurant? Perhaps you can get some Japanese experience at the Tokyo Kitchen Japanese Restaurant. Available at a few locations around the Klang Valley, I have personally tried out their food for a few times at SetiaWalk, Puchong.

Tokyo Kitchen @ SetiaWalk, Puchong

There are 2 Japanese restaurants here at the Setiawalk, Puchong: The Sushi Tei, and the Tokyo Kitchen. Food quality and price tag of these 2 restaurants are quite similar; they are serving some unique and creative menu, which cannot be found in other restaurants! Let's call them: the modern Japanese Restaurant.

Not a Typical Coffee Experience:Typica Cafe No.2 @ Ampang New Village

Let's look at this phenomena currently happening at Klang Valley and Penang: new cafes sprung up like mushrooms; perhaps every 5 out of 10 owned by baristas who have won medal or award, or even owned by an international cupping judge. Most of them have great interior design (need BIG MONEY in the initial investment), beautiful latte art (girls like it) and always appear on magazines and social media (how long can they last?). I can easily Google "Top 10 Cafe in KL" or even make my own list if I've got enough time (but I don't); a popular cafe may gain a lot of attention (and business) but what's next? There are so many competitors out there but have we got enough customers? The question may well answered by the Typica Cafe: I saw they are shifting away from the mainstream: being different, being niche!

Typica Cafe has accumulated a group of hardcore fans over years. Being one of their supporters, I really don't mind paying more during my visit because I am not only drinking a cup of coffee at the cafe, but also a part of my learning curve -- about coffee. Typica Cafe imports raw coffee beans directly from the farmers and roast right there at the cafe. Sometime the owner visited coffee plantations and hand-pick the bean herself! Rest assured only perfect-beans were roasted because every baristas in Typica Cafe really know-how and even go to the extend of separating the round bean (the male bean) from the rest! The reason is because the round bean give slightly different type of characteristic with the normal bean. You see, every steps has a story to tell! The stories inherited from the coffee tree, from the planters, and the geographical / climates effects on the characteristics of the beans produced. Do not mention the aroma and taste which one's suppose to expect on every type of single origin coffee, which differ from one bean to another.

You see, people has learn more now about coffee and able to tell what kind of coffee they really want. Maybe that's the reason why Typica Cafe No.2 was born: to cater the niche, and to preserve the story.

The newly opened Hung Xing Seafood (鸿星海鲜餐厅)is the latest addition to the collections of seafood restaurants at Kota Kinabalu. Like other seafood restaurants, Hung Xing is a serve-no-pork restaurant and serves chinese-style cooking.

Appetizing even at a look, this prawn was coated with sweet and sour mango sauce, then sprung with some sesame!

[Event] KKFBBF Gathering @ Open Kitchen Metro Town, Kota Kinabalu

KKFBBF is a short for the "Kota Kinabalu Food & Bakery Bake Fiesta", will be held at Suria Sabah Shopping Mall on 26th & 27th April, later this year. I was given the opportunity by event organizer, Mr Alfred Allen, to be part of the KKFBBF's blog's media! I am good at writing up good food but never thought of how to write up an event, I assume they are just about the same -- be honest!

This is the very first KKFBBF organized, and its open for public, free of course! So what can one expect here? From my understanding, the event would be a fusion between an exhibition and a carnival. The "food people" (restaurant or cafe owner, baker, food supplier...etc) show their best products / effort to the "hungry people" (people like me & you!). There are string of contests and games waiting for you, too!

My first KKFBBF in-house gathering was organized here at the Open Kitchen Metro Town, all sponsored by the restaurant's owner, Mr Forrest Yan. This is a restaurant which promotes healthy eating: it is strictly no MSG added to all dishes, low salt, less oil, and use locally produce organic veggies. Forrest is selling fresh veggies here too, organic!
