Somtum Thai Restaurant @ Cyber Square, Kota Kinabalu

Somtum is a Thai Restaurant located at Cyber Square Commercial Centre, Kepayan here. It only take less than 10 minutes drive from Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA). Somtum also means salad in Siamese, for example, Mango Somtum, Papaya Somtum, Crab Meat Somtum and Mix Fruit Somtum. Somtum is comprises of all important flavors in Thai Food: savoury from the Fish Sauce and salt, sour from Lime, sweetness of palm sugar and the spiciness of bird's eye chili.

Larb Kai is another rare dishes I found here: Larb is a popular dish among people in the North Eastern Thai region, and is quite similar to Chinese cooking. There are 6 types of Larb available here at Somtum: Larb Nea (minced beef), Larb Kai (minced chicken), Larb Pla (minced fish), Larb Koong (minced prawn), Larb Plamek (minced squid) and Larb Thalay (minced mixed seafood). Normally serve with stocky rice.

Thoughtful word!

Siamese Iced Coffee and Milk Tea

Mango Somtum (RM12)
The salad is packed with the crunchiness of the unripe mango cutlets, anchovies, crispy ground nuts and long bean. As I mentioned earlier, Somtum contain the mixture of Siamese flavors - sour, savoury... all intensely infused into one plate. Definitely the best Thai appetizer ever!

Taste like rojak? Very close, but not...

Clear Tomyum
There are two types of tomyum offered here at the Somtum: Clear and Red Tomyum. Remember, the color of the soup don't decide the heat/spiciness, the chef do! Tell the chef / waitress beforehand what level you can take.
A kind reminder : )

A bowl of seafood - where is the soup?

Larb Kai
Minced chicken with cabbage, long bean, kangkung, and Thai basil.

Pineapple Fried Rice

The food is tasty, but unfortunately the service was of the waiter was very rude in taking our orders. He was impatient and when we say we will add more orders if the current order is nt enough he quickly snap in and say he will not accept it and even if he accept it the meals will arrived late becox it atkes time to cook...HOW RUDE!! We were celebrating birthday there and when we asked him to help snap a pic he rejected saying he do not know how to take pic n walk away...Food is good but wIth such bad customer service we sworn not to visit this palce bak nor recommend to friends and families...

Thanks for your sharing at Foodiotkk. I must agree with you that the food quality and customer service are all equally important to diners. Hope they notice about their problem and improve. I am visiting the restaurant again, let's see...

Just been there for lunch.....goodness. I think I have just tasted the whole bowl of SALT in the food. We had the Vercemilli Salad, Tom Yum and Pineapple Fried Rice.
The Vercemilli Salad was the first to arrive after a 30 Minute for a not lunch time 3 tables. It was salty and the bowl was filled with fish sauce up to 1/3 of the bowl.
Tom Yum soup was next. This is more salty than the salad!!! We didnt even drink the soup after 1 tablespoon because it is just too SALTY. I can understand if it's only one dish that was "accidently" salted. But 2 out of 2 is not "accidently"
Lastly the so called Pineapple Fried Rice. I gave them....the Rice came in a pineapple but it is definetely NOT pineapple fried rice. I can do a better job than the rice they had fried!!!!!
To us the food was overrated. Maybe they had changed Chef or other reason but for a RM18.00 Pineapple Fried Rice, I expect more than chicken, rice, onion and soy sauce!!!!
