Pregio by Barista Caffe @ Metro Town, Kota Kinabalu (RELOCATED)

UPDATE: THIS CAFE HAS BEEN RELOCATED TO BSA FUTSAL KOLOMBONG

I believed Pregio is the first cafe introducing the concept of Single Origin Coffee in KK. Pregio by Barista Caffe is a brand name imported from Hong Kong, which exist as a coffee school and a cafe by itself. We managed to meet with the owner / coffee specialist Ms. Janice Leong and had a few words with her while appreciate the difference between a Brazilian and an African Highland coffee, it's like a short coffee class for us, for free! Haha!!!

Every types coffee beans has its own characteristic; it could be fruity, sour, bitter, chocolate-like aroma, woody, earthy... generally, all coffee should have these characteristic but at a different percentage. For instant, the most common coffee bean in the world, Robusta is more bitter as compared to another coffee bean, Arabica, which is less sour compared to the former. However, coffee bean grown from different places with different geography, climate and soil tend to produce different kind of these combinations, don't forget the details such as bean roasting technique, grinding (the grounded size) and the coffee-brewing method (espresso? coffee press? syphon?).

Loved their interior

So, what's so special with Single Origin? Well, during our visit Starbucks or Coffee Bean, the cappuccino or espresso we ordered is mostly made from a BLENDS of two or more coffee beans. Meaning that, the coffee merchant already selected the best combination of coffee beans to optimize / balance the taste and aroma and of course, the commercial value of the coffee bean. Each chain cafe should have their signature blend / special roast every time!  For a blend, the characteristic of the coffee is already set by the coffee specialist / merchant and is more friendly to most consumers. On the other hand, coffee lovers prefer to explore their taste buds by tasting a Single Origin, and appreciate the characteristics and the often, inter-related background story of the coffee bean.

Decent write up, but I would like to point out that they only serve Single Origin coffee for their filter coffees but for their espresso it's actually a blend of different origins which changes from time to time depending on their roastery in Hong Kong. The concept they introduce is more than serving single origin coffee, they are the first people to bring in specialist coffee shops into KK. A simple reason why espresso tend to have blends because by making blends, you have a more all-rounded coffee drink which can be used as an espresso, macchiato, flatwhite, latte etc without sacrificing the overall taste. Whilst that single origin coffees tend to be more adventurous, it can either be super fruity with citrus notes or dark chocolate + cherry notes.

I used to be a London-based food blogger and coffee geek hence I know what it takes to make a good coffee. In my opinion, Pregio sets very high standards and it serves the best coffee in KK by miles. Don't even mention Santola bar, I have been there and was utterly disappointed as their coffee was exactly like my Dolce Gusto Capsule machine.

I wrote a review for Pregio in my instagram you can see it here.

Hi Eugene, can't agree with you more! Introduction of single origin coffee in KK is tough for the cafe owner as well because not every people understand why the price tag is higher than a cup of Starbucks Frappes! Let's hope Pregio maintain their high standard!

Went to this cafe earlier this morning and as the two gentlemen had commented, I second.

Very warm and friendly service and knowing it was my first time, I was served tender choc cookies and given a taste of their signature coffee jelly in the house.

I must say I was pleasantly delighted with my visit and they made my day.

Kudos and keep it up!
I definitely will return on my next trip.
